Operating systems serve as the intermediary between computers and people.  The operating system is like a translation between two parties with a language barrier. It allows the user to operate the device or system as if they could speak machine or assembly language themselves without actually knowing it. "As the interface between user and hardware, operating systems must be designed with due consideration for both user requirements and technological constraints and opportunities"( Muntz,1974).
